VDOT – Cut the grass!

Or more to the point, contract out the job to someone who will cut the grass. I’m talking about cutting grass on the median and sides of the road in McLean along Route 123 from Tysons Corner to the George Washington Parkway. The grass is literally two feet high. This is no exaggeration, and this is a disgrace to our community.

Why can’t VDOT cut the grass? Who knows. But since they have failed so miserably to do so, the whole job should be contracted out to a company who can get the job done.

There is a good precedent for this – the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers, which has turned into a large contracting agency. They still have the responsibility to oversee the design, engineering and construction of their projects in our country and around the world. But the people swinging the hammers and driving the heavy equipment vehicles are not employees of the Army Corps of Engineers. They are contractors.

Likewise, VDOT should become a contracting agency and hire companies to do everything from transportation projects, to road maintenance, to grass cutting.
