Spartans' lacrosse player Eric Madigan will become a Pioneer after high school.

Madigan is a lacrosse Pioneer

Mark Madigan has been a pioneer for lacrosse as it has grown across the eastern portion of Loudoun County for several years.

Madigan was a driving force in starting up the Eastern Loudoun Lacrosse League and is now the league's president.

So it only makes sense that Mark's son, Eric, become a Pioneer in lacrosse as well.

Eric Madigan, a rising senior attacker at Broad Run High School who has played the increasingly popular sport for nearly a decade, recently made an early commitment to attend and play lacrosse for the Sacred Heart Pioneers beginning in 2008.

I'm real happy,” said Eric, who accepted a partial scholarship to play for Sacred Heart, a Division I program in Fairfield, Conn.

Madigan chose the Pioneers over several other colleges, including Bucknell, Ohio State, Marist and Lynchburg.

I had a good amount of offers,” he said. “But I went down the list and knew I wanted to play at Sacred Heart more than the others. I made a good choice.”

A three-year varsity starter for Broad Run, Madigan was the 2007 Dulles District Player of the Year after netting 62 goals and dishing out 41 assists. Madigan has also received word that he will be named a High School All-American by U.S. Lacrosse when that list is officially released in coming weeks.

Madigan will join a familiar face at Sacred Heart when he reunites with Evan Morgan, his teammate for two years at Broad Run. Morgan made the All-Colonial Athletic Association freshmen team in his first season at Sacred Heart.

I had a really good time there,” Madigan said of his unofficial visit to Sacred Heart earlier this year. “I went up there and hung out with Evan, and all the guys were really great.”

Sacred Heart plays in the ultra-competitive CAA, which qualified four teams for the 2007 NCAA lacrosse tournament. The Pioneers went 4-8 last spring against a demanding schedule, including a 12-9 loss to Delaware, who reached the NCAA tournament semifinals.

Madigan said he's already building a great relationship with Pioneer coach Tom Mariano and there is a good chance he'll see extended playing time as a freshman.

Before moving on to college, Madigan is looking forward to his final high school season.

The Spartans have established themselves as one of the top programs in the state under coach Phil Truiett. Plus, Madigan is eager to possibly play with his younger brother, Ryan, who will be a freshman at Broad Run this fall.

I think this will one of our best years,” Madigan said. “I'm looking forward to getting back to the state tournament.”
