Washington Gas facility to open

Washington Gas trainees will no longer have to train in the field because their training facility will look like your neighborhood.

On July 10, “Pipetown,” a state-of-the-art Washington Gas training facility, will open in Springfield.

Designed to “stimulate an urban community,” the facility is a mock-up of four city streets, 10 buildings, gaslights, gravel roads, curb boxes, a fire training field and a complete natural gas distribution system.

Trainers can use multiple controls to create a wide array of realistic damaged facilities, leak and fire emergency scenarios,” with leak settings randomly changed so that trainees don't know what to expect when they are called to respond, according to a company news release.

A ribbon-cutting celebration will be held at 8 a.m. on Thursday, July 10 at the Operations Center at 6801 Industrial Road, Springfield.
