The Whirlwinds can now clinch the league championship on Saturday with a win over rival Fairfax Country Club. Kayla O'Malley, Matt Callahan, Laura Kellan and Alec Dolton all won four events for Westwood, while Palmer Lloyd was victorious in three events.
The RiverBend StingRays lost to Fairfax Country Club, 297-219, on July 12. Individual first-place winners for RiverBend included Ryan Windus, Max Trautwein, Jake Trautwein, Michael Killmon, Grace Hardardt, Devlin Wesolowski, Will Koeppen, Jack Peele, Blaine Appleby, Luke Peele, Conor Wesolowski and Micaela Grassi. Jessica Hawken won four blue ribbons, while Erin Fredrick and Carter Bennett took home three apiece.
The Langley Wildthings lost to the Cardinal Hill Cardinals, 219-183, in NVSL action over the weekend. But despite the loss, Langley broke three team records and had almost 70 percent of its swimmers clock personal-best times. Double-event winners included Emily Wallach, Isaac Peress, Nathan Johnson, Tatiana Bennett, Katie Robinson and Meghan Overend. Johnson broke the 9-10 backstroke record with a time of 38.40 seconds, while his sister, Nicole Johnson, broke the 13-14 breaststroke record with a time of 36.83. The girls 15-18 medley relay team (Overend, Johnson, Tracy DeMocker and Sarah Woodford) broke a record from 1987 by more than three seconds with a time of 2:16.47.
The Hunter Woods Blue Marlins defeated the Glade Gators, 667-431, on July 12. The Marlins were anchored by the strong swimming of triple-event winners Matthew Beach, Ryan Vintimilla, Victoria Thai, Dylann Nasr, Logan Nasr, Lauren Herron, Sean Shada, Catherine Martin and Lucy Tamberrino. For the Gators, Andrew Draganov was the lone three-time winner.
In the Lake Anne Stingrays' narrow 540-520 defeat of the Autumnwood Piranhas, Kat Mckinstry smashed the previous Lake Anne team record in the girls 15-18 50-meter freestyle. Her time of 28.69 seconds knocked off the seven-year-old time of 29.05. Triple-event winners for the Stingrays included Mary Watson, Kathryn Paiewonsky, Ramzi Assir, Bryan Marquet, Scott Mayo and Suzanne Ziaii. Logan King, Molly Ellor, Jake Elliott and Bridget Newell fared well for the Piranhas. They, too, took three events.
The North Hills Hurricanes' 670-445 defeat of the Newbridge Dolphins saw new team records established for both outfits. The Hurricanes' Rachel Swarts swam a 34.11-second time in the girls 13-14 50-meter backstroke; her swim bested the old mark by just eight hundredths of a second. In the girls 15-18 50-meter breaststroke, Shannon Burke displaced a five-year-old record with a time of 38.39. Strong swimming by Grace Tierney, Alexander Boelcskevy, Courtner Clark, Zachary Deker, Maggie Sagan, Swarts, and Chris Clark also aided the Hurricanes. Each took three events at the meet. The Dolphins' Winston Evans, Eric Compton, Martha Carro, and Burke were three time winners in the defeat.
The Lake Audubon Barracudas dominated, 706-437, against the Ridge Heights Sharks. Three-time winners for the victors were Jacob Cole, Seretha McHugh, Sarah Wolfe, John Hughes, Vela McBride, Austin Chute and Alissa Avilov. In the losing effort, the Sharks had strong outings out of Harrison Hughes and Emily Sennett.
Chesterbrook and Lee Graham swam a Saturday meet on July 12 for the first time in memory. It provided an opportunity for the two nearby clubs to take each other on in a dual-meet setting. Chesterbrook prevailed, 244.5-157.5, in a meet marked by strong individual performances and a 25-meter swim-off between the two head coaches. Chesterbrook's double winners were Matthew Kuhlik, Veronica Wolff, Alston Offutt, Tatiana Kersten, and Hannah Welch. At the relay break, Lee Graham coach Mike Cook and Chesterbrook coach Joe Viola, long-time friends and NVSL veterans, squared off in a 25-meter race. The finish was too close to call, as partisans on either side of the pool claimed victory. The win left Chesterbrook with a 3-1 record heading into this Saturday's dual-meet finale against Hamlet. Earlier in the week, Chesterbrook finished second in the Division I Relay Carnival. The team is sending 20 relay squads, the most in the NVSL, to the league's All-Star Relay Carnival this Wednesday at Springboard Pool in Springfield.
Great Falls defeated Village West, 207-195. With the win, Great Falls improved to 3-1 on the season. Double-event winners for Great Falls included James Cutler, Will Kemmerer, Ana Mulligan, and Max Wingo.
The Hamlet Green Feet lost to the Vienna Aquatic Club Gators, 220-182. The loss dropped Hamlet to fourth place in Division 1 with a 2-2 record. Double winners for the Green Feet were Connor Rainey, William Gent, and Erica Roesel. Graduating senior Ryan Lichtenfels, honored at the meet, set a new team record in the boys 15-18 breaststroke with a time of 32.66 seconds, and was part of the boys 15-18 medley relay team (Evan Coar, Alex Brumas and Sam Speers) which set a new Hamlet record of 1:56.28.
