Sports in Brief: Centreville (July 17-23)

SYA Storm hits Ocean City and wins title:

The SYA Storm U-9 girls soccer team traveled to Ocean City for the 2008 Beach 5 Sand Soccer Tournament and emerged as champions. The Storm went undefeated at 4-0 and scored 23 goals while allowing their opponents to score just three.

The Storm defeated the Skilz Sisters and teams from Waldorf and Severna Park in the preliminary round before winning the championship game, 2-1, in double overtime.

The Storm now prepare to compete in their third season of WAGS, having gone undefeated in fall 2007 and spring 2008, outscoring their opponents 129-8.

Area swimming roundup:

The Pleasant Valley Piranhas (1-3) lost to Sully Station 2 in NVSL Division 12 action on July 12. Boys double-event winners included Casey Graham, Garrett Anderson, Grant Gorvett, Ricky Hayden and Ryan Estep. Girls double-event winners were Kaitlyn Neitz and Maddie Graham. The boys 15-18 medley relay team, which consisted of Hayden, Tommy Meeusen, James Caron and Christopher Hoffman, broke its own previous team record.

The Sequoia Farms Stingrays fell to 2-2 on the season with a loss to Armfield Farms last weekend. The Stingrays kept it close during the individual events, but lacked the depth in the relays needed to pull out a win. Sequoia Farms will look to end its season on a high note with a meet this weekend against the rival Chase Club Sharks.

The Stingrays had several strong performances against Armfield Farms. Chris Martin was a triple-event winner in the freestyle, breaststroke and butterfly. Will and Jennifer Steinhilber were each double winners in the breaststroke and butterfly, while Brian Chapman was a double winner in the freestyle and backstroke and Bridgey O'Malley was a double winner in the backstroke and butterfly. The Stingrays had 10 other single event winners and six victories in the relays.
