Storm condemns Herndon home
Herndon resident Allen Crawford came home on Wednesday, June 4, to find that his home had been condemned, an 80-foot tree laying where his upstairs workout room had once been.
On that day, violent storms took a devastating toll on the 800 and 900 blocks of Herndon's Young Dairy Court, knocking down trees and ripping siding from several homes along that stretch of street.
Crawford, a widower and 22-year resident of the neighborhood, was the first person to buy a house on the street.
He was in the process of doing some interior renovations to the home when the multi-ton tree uprooted and fell across the entire length of the home, crushing his chimney and the majority of the second floor.
“I was at Lowe's buying a new door, when something in my mind told me that something was wrong. I knew it wasn't going to be good when I got home,” Crawford said, fighting back tears.
An interior painter – Tom Jensen – was not injured despite being in the home when the tree fell.
Just down the street, Chris Garr also came home that afternoon to find that her family room had been demolished by an uprooted tree. “My two dogs were in the house and are still traumatized,” she said on Thursday.
Andy Cooper, owner of landscaping company ADC Enterprises, brought in a construction crane to help the neighbors dispose of the trees.
“This is the worst storm damage I have seen since Hurricane Ivan,” he said. Cooper also provided Garr with a power generator. He said that he and his crew had been working for 16 hours straight since the storm hit at around 2:45 p.m. on Wed. “After this, we are going to McLean and then to Georgetown Pike,” he said with a sigh.
According to Herndon Public Information Officer Anne Curtis, a total of eight homes in Herndon sustained significant damage in the storm, with three homes being partially condemned.
Crawford, the only resident whose home was totally condemned by the town, is currently staying at a nearby Residence Inn until his home is assessed and repaired.
