A forgettable night for Woodson lacrosse
The Woodson girls and boys lacrosse teams entered last Friday's Liberty District tournament title games with two veritable chances to complete a sweep. But after an eight-goal effort from Stone Bridge sophomore Lauren Giusti and a resilient performance from what was left of Langley's boys team, both Woodson squads quickly turned their attention toward redemption in the upcoming Northern Region tournament.
The Woodson girls lacrosse team dropped a 14-11 decision to the Bulldogs, while the boys suffered an 8-3 loss to the Saxons. Both squads will open the region tournament tonight with games against South County.
Despite the district tournament losses, both Woodson squads delivered mightily during the regular season.
Senior midfielder Sarah Vinall was named the Liberty District Player of the Year, while three other Cavaliers (Becca Geist, Carrie Pritchard, Meg Thaxton) earned first team All-District laurels.
On the boys side, Ross Fernandez, Stephen Colangelo and Paul Gaski (who scored all three of his team's goals against Langley) were recognized as first team All-District choices.
Playing without Thaxton after the VCU-bound senior suffered a broken arm on April 17, Woodson took a 9-8 lead when Pritchard (team-high 5 goals) scored early in the second half. Still, Woodson was unable to maintain the lead.
“We lost because we couldn't do the basics,” said Woodson coach Jenn Wish, whose team's record slipped to 9-3 after the loss. “We were dropping balls and making bad passes. We need to get our 'flow' back before we can think about winning any more games.”
The Woodson boys team ran into an emotionally-charged Langley group after three Saxons were suspended for their roles in an altercation during last Wednesday's semifinal win over Madison.
Coach Jon FitzGerald had a hunch that his team might struggle with the situation, but he also expressed hope that his team will echo the Saxons' survival mode in the days ahead.
“Human beings have this instinct of survival and [Langley] just put it all together and played excellent lacrosse,” said FitzGerald, whose team dropped to 8-5. “They played like it was the last game of their lives and we didn't.
“I think we got humiliated [Friday], and hopefully we'll rebound in the regional tournament the way that they rebounded with the adversity that they faced the last week.”
