Sports in Brief: Centreville

Local golfers win junior tournament

Two Centreville residents participated in last weekend's Plantations Junior Golf Tour event at Royal New Kent Golf Club and won their respective age divisions. Sara Stanley shot a first-round 89 and second-round 86 to finish first in the girls 12-14 age division by 18 strokes. Brian Keith shot rounds of 70 and 77 to win the boys 16-19 age division by eight strokes.

The Plantations Junior Golf Tour offers boys and girls ages 8-19 the chance to play competitive tournament golf at first-class golf courses. For more information, visit www.pjgt.com.

Tryouts and announcements

Online registration is now available for fall SYA sports at www.syasports.org. Fall sports include football, cheerleading, field hockey, soccer, cross country, Babe Ruth, baseball and softball. Register early to avoid late fees and assure team placement. For more information, visit the SYA Web site at http://www.syasports.org. Registration for summer sports is also still available.

The SYA Storm and Blaze U-9 spring soccer travel teams will be holding open tryouts for the fall U-10 season on May 27 and 28. A third U-10 team will also be formed from the tryout pool of players. The Centreville High School Athletic Boosters will sponsor two sessions of basketball camp for boys. Shooting camp for boys in rising grades 9-12 will be held June 16-18 from 5 to 9 p.m. at a cost of $40. Full-day camp for boys in rising grades 3-10 will be July 21-25 from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. with a cost of $135. Chantilly High School will be holding its annual Chargers Basketball Camp for four sessions in July. The cost is $130 per session. For an application, call coach Jim Smith at 703-222-6306.

The Westfield Athletic Booster Club has announced the dates for three sports camps this summer. An elite girls basketball camp for players ages 10 to 15 will take place July 7-11. Players ages 8 to 15 can participate in Session 2, from July 21 to 25. Each session is from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and tuition is $140 for the week. The Bulldog Baseball Camp for players ages 7 to 13 will take place June 30 to July 3. The cost is $120, and interested participants can register at bulldogbaseball.net.
