Westfield sweeps outdoor district track and field meets

The Westfield boys and girls outdoor track and field teams “loaded up” for the Concorde District championship meet last Thursday and Friday, which was held on both teams' home track.

It paid off.

The Westfield boys team outscored Oakton, 133-94, and the girls topped Robinson, 190-84, to take home a pair of team titles.

Five different Bulldogs won individual titles, highlighted by Tasia Potasinski's three. Potasinski, who won state indoor titles in the 1,000-meter run, 1,600 and as a member of the 4x800 relay team, earned first-place finishes in the 400 (59.58 seconds), 800 (2:17.26) and 1,600 (5:08.24).

“She just continues to work hard,” said Westfield coach Scott Razcko, whose team will compete at Thursday and Friday's Northern Region meet, held at Lake Braddock Secondary School. “She works hard every day, and she's really determined to do well on a daily basis.”

Haley Boone captured a pair of hurdles events, winning the 100 with a time of 17.08 and the 300 by clocking in at 49.08. Westfield's 4x800 relay team, which included Leah Carroll, Jessie Hartman, Eman Bani and Brittany Sevachko, finished first with a time of 9:25.77.

Razcko's bunch took first in four of the field events, led by Ty Ruland's discus (149 feet, 10 inches) and shot put (49-03) wins.

“[Ruland] has had a great year, and he just keeps getting better and better,” Razcko said. “Our throws coach, [Brandon] Kinas, has done a real good job bringing him along.”

Kaylin Newman won the girls shot put with a toss of 36-09, and David Skahn scored a first-place mark in the high jump with his 6-02 leap.

But Westfield wasn't the only area team to have its stars shine at the Concorde meet. Both the Chantilly girls and boys teams finished third, as the girls totaled 80.5 points to the boys' 87.5.

Wesley Sun took first place in the pole vault with a leap of 13-06, and teammate Christopher Foley touched the tape first in the 3,200, finishing with a time of 9:53.54.

The Chantilly girls 4x100 relay team, consisting of Amira Idris, Tyeisha Jarrett, Meera Abdul-Malek and Genevieve Manley, took first place and needed only 50.91 to do so.

The Centreville boys and girls teams posted a pair of fifth-place finishes, with the boys earning 48 points and the girls amassing 53.

Individually, Brittni Finch was the name to know and remember. Finch posted three individual wins, taking honors in the 100 (12.63), 200 (26.77) and long jump (17-04.50).

Katie Bannon's 9-foot mark in the pole vault was good enough for first place, and Ray Willoughby earned himself a district title in the 110 hurdles, clocking in at 15.79.
