South Lakes boys win first region title
The South Lakes boys track and field team added another chapter to its storybook season Friday night, winning the first Northern Region championship in team history. A week after capturing their first district title in over two decades, the Seahawks scored 93.5 points to beat out second-place Edison, which had 86.
“This is great,” said first-year coach Alfred Buckley. “It's fantastic for these guys. It's all due to them. I tried to bring a team approach and I tried to bring the concept of not being overconfident, but being confident and focusing on what they have to do. They did what they had to do and I'm really excited about that.”
South Lakes was led by senior A.J. Price, who won three individual region championships in his first year on the team. Price, who will play football at Penn State University next year, took first place in the long jump, 200-meter dash and 400. He also placed third in the high jump and anchored the Seahawks' 4x400-meter relay team, which took second.
“A.J.'s great. He's the backbone,” Buckley said. “As A.J. goes, the team goes.”
In the girls meet, Lake Braddock won its fourth-straight region title.
