Group works for prom safety

The McLean-based Safe Community Coalition is urging parents to be aware of their children's after-prom plans this season through Project Hospitality.

Founded by Del. Margi Vanderhye before she became an elected official, Project Hospitality gets the word out to restaurants, bars and hotels that they should be extra aware this time of year of teenagers planning after-prom parties and attempting to purchase alcohol.

“This program has two measurable goals – the immediacy of further reducing the incidents of underage drinking; and bringing the hospitality industry, local law enforcement and parents together on this life-threatening issue with our young people,” said Jim Wordsworth, of the National Restaurant Association.

McLean and Langley high schools will both hold their proms this weekend.
