JLNV Cookbook "Best Of" VA

By prebble

Recipes from the Junior League of Northern Virginia’s (JLNV) award-winning cookbook What Can I Bring? have been selected for inclusion in a new “best of” cookbook, “The Best of the Best from Virginia, Cookbook II." The book is a collection of recipes gathered by authors Gwen McKee and Barbara Moseley and is being published by Quail Ridge Press.

McKee and Moseley view the book as a companion piece to the first release “The Best of the Best from Virginia,” which was published nearly fifteen years ago. In addition to their region-specific cookbooks, the duo have also compiled “The Best of the Best State Cookbook Series” which features their favorite recipes from across the United States.

The JLNV’s cookbook, What Can I Bring?, has been included in America’s Best Hometown Cookbooks by Oxmoor House for three consecutive years and was named the #2 cookbook by Virginia Living Magazine (June 2003) . What Can I Bring? is currently in its fourth printing and contains more than 230 double-tested recipes.

One of the recipes in What Can I Bring? even grabbed the attention of White House pastry chef Roland Mesnier. After tasting the Black Russian Cake and learning the cake’s secret ingredients were kahlua and vodka, Mesnier exclaimed “The Junior League of Northern Virginia's Black Russian cake is so good you can almost serve it on the rocks!"

What Can I Bring? has generated more than $150,000 toward supporting the League’s community programs which focus on preparing local children for success. Every 10 copies sold provide all of the items needed for a backpack full of supplies for one child as a part of the League’s JamPacks program, and every 7 cookbooks sold supports a birthday party for one area child living in a shelter as a part of its Birthday Angels program.

The Junior League of Northern Virginia is currently celebrating 50 years of service in Northern Virginia. Proceeds from What Can I Bring? and other fundraisers have allowed the League to establish more than 25 community programs, donate more than 2.6 million dollars, and contribute hundreds of thousands of volunteer hours to improving local communities. In 2007, programs such as Back to School Health Fairs and JamPacks enabled 123 uninsured children to receive free physicals and immunizations and 478 at-risk children to receive backpacks full of school.

What Can I Bring? is available through the League’s website (www.jlnv.org) as well as Border Books, the Mount Vernon Gift Shop, Manassas Flower Gallery, and other select gift shops throughout the region. The JLNV is also pleased to provide in-store events where it will help market and sell the cookbook as well as bring a few favorite recipes for people to sample. If you are interested in becoming a vendor, would like to schedule an in-store event, or would like more information on What Can I Bring? or the League, please contact us at cookbook@jlnv.org or (703) 442-4163.
